BE AWARE OF CALIFORNIA LAWS ON LEAVES OF ABSENCE AND PAID TIME OFF TO AVOID LIABILITY!

California has more mandatory leaves of absence and rules about vacation, sick leave and paid time off than any other state. To avoid costly litigation, employers must be aware of when a leave is available to an employee, what rights must be provided to the employee, and what employee obligations can be enforced. Employers also must be familiar with the applicable sick leave rules, vacation requirements and how to apply paid time off to absences.

In this informative seminar, employment law attorney Karen L. Gabler will discuss California's numerous leave of absence laws, paid time off, sick leave, vacation, and related benefits and obligations. Topics covered will include the following:

  • Which leaves must be provided to employees
  • Eligibility standards for each leave
  • Documentation of absence
  • Reinstatement requirements
  • Insurance requirements
  • The interplay between PDL, PFL, FMLA, CFRA and SDI
  • Disability, pregnancy, baby bonding, family leave
  • Injured or ill family members and domestic partners
  • The relationship between WC, FEHA and ADA
  • Bereavement, jury/witness duty, school visits, domestic violence and time off to vote
  • Mandated and voluntary benefits during a leave of absence
  • Paid time off, vacation, and sick leave (state and city-specific)
