Does your handbook prevent problems or create them?

A well-drafted employee handbook is among the most important and effective tools available to an employer to promote good employee relations and to prevent and defend lawsuits. It can eliminate unnecessary disputes or misunderstandings, and can establish a coherent unified approach to many common situations.

But many handbooks lack legally-compliant and required policies, making such employers easy targets for litigation. The most common (and easily avoidable) error is the failure to update the handbook annually, to incorporate new legislation and recent case law. Even where a handbook meets minimum, legal standards, the failure to include strategic provisions and incorporate best practices can leave employers open to preventable legal challenges.

In this informative seminar, employment law attorneys Jonathan Fraser Light and Susan S. Waag will review the most important updates to your employee policies for 2018. Topics will include the following:

  • Expansion of legally-protected classes
  • Mandatory changes to the harassment policies
  • New-Parent Leave for smaller employers
  • FMLA/CFRA revisions
  • Excused and unexcused absences
  • PTO policies vs. vacation and sick leave policies
  • Day of rest requirements
  • New language to address meal breaks and rest periods
  • Payroll options (and prohibitions)
