California has more mandatory leaves of absence and rules about vacation, sick leave and paid time off than any other state. To avoid costly litigation, employers must be aware of when a leave is available to an employee, what rights must be provided to the employee, and what employee obligations can be enforced. Employers also must be familiar with the applicable sick leave rules, vacation requirements, and how to apply paid time off to absences.
