On July 17, 2017, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (“USCIS”) issued a new version of the I-9 form (available here: www.uscis.gov/i-9). Use of the new version will be mandatory starting September 18, 2017.
The last time a new form was issued was November 14, 2016. Although that form had an expiration date of August 31, 2019, employers are prohibited from using that version after September 17, 2017. Employers may start using the new form now, but starting September 18, 2017, only the new form will be permitted.
Since the new I-9 has the same expiration date as the old one, check the bottom left-hand corner of the form for the issue date to be sure you are using the correct document (“7/17/17 N”).
The changes to the I-9 form are fairly minor, reflecting changes in names of certain bureaucratic offices, and additions to the list of Acceptable Documents.
