The IRS Standard Mileage Reimbursement Rates Are On The Rise For 2019
Posted December 17, 2018

Effective January 1, 2019, the IRS optional standard mileage rates for cars, vans, pickups or panel trucks will change as follows:

  • 58 cents per mile for business miles driven (up 3.5 cents from 54.5 cents last year);
  • 20 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes (up 2 cents from 18 cents last year); or
  • 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations (same as last year).

Remember that employers are required to reimburse employees for work-related mileage, other than the usual commute to and from work. Employers may choose to pay rates lower than the IRS standard if the chosen rates fully compensate the employee for travel-related costs (including fuel, insurance, repairs, and depreciation). However, payment of the IRS standard rates will be deemed reasonable and sufficient reimbursement as a general rule.
