About The Seminar

California provides employees with more leaves of absence (with employers of all sizes) than any other state. To ensure the utmost productivity in the workplace and avoid costly litigation, employers must be aware of the leaves available to employees and the employee obligations an employer can enforce.

In this informative seminar, employment law attorneys Jonathan Fraser Light and Susan S. Waag will discuss over 30 real-life scenarios involving employee disabilities and leaves of absence, from the interaction among FMLA, CFRA, PDL, NPL, PFL and SDI for pregnancy leave situations to dealing with absent employees following the exhaustion of FMLA/CFRA leave.

Topics covered will include:

  • Effective ways to deal with abuse of time off
  • Administration of benefits during leaves
  • The employee who repeatedly provides a doctor's note just before being scheduled to return to work
  • How to find a replacement without getting sued
  • How long an employer must hold a position open
  • The interaction of multiple leave laws during pregnancy and related baby bonding leave
  • Strategies for warning or disciplining employees who are out on or are about to return from leave
  • Strategies for encouraging poorly-performing employees not to return
  • Handling return-to-work issues when employees continue to be disabled
  • The documentation necessary to support the actions taken by the employer

Due to the popularity of this program and space limitations, attendance is limited to no more than three people per company.
