Preparing employee performance evaluations is a task often dreaded by managers and human resource professionals alike. And yet, documenting performance is critical for employee productivity, workplace morale, effective supervisor-subordinate communication and legal protection. Like all employment documentation, poorly-prepared evaluations can be more dangerous than no evaluations at all.

In this practical and informative seminar, employment law attorney Karen L. Gabler will discuss a variety of issues related to preparing and presenting employee evaluations. Topics covered will include the following:

  • Should we conduct evaluations? Why?
  • What kind of evaluations should we have?
  • Should we ask employees to do self-evaluations?
  • What format is best?
  • What exactly are we evaluating?
  • What categories should we include?
  • What should we say (or not say!) in evaluations?
  • Should we use grades or numerical scores?
  • How do we use evaluations to assess bonus eligibility? And should we?
  • How do we present the evaluation to the employee?
  • How can we make sure the evaluation is useful even after it's over?
  • Why are evaluations so difficult, and how can we make them easier on everyone?
